Adult Therapeutic Services
At Yellow Door, we offer a range of therapeutic services available to anyone who has suffered any type of unwanted sexual encounter at any point in their life. In addition, we also have support available to those who have experienced domestic abuse.
All of the services listed on this page are delivered at our centre in Southampton.
Counselling is a talking therapy that allows you to discuss any experiences or difficult feelings in a safe, confidential environment. You might come to counselling with specific experiences or events that you would like to talk to someone about or work through, or you may simply want to explore your thoughts and feelings in more depth.
We are able to offer up to 24 weeks of counselling. You will have weekly sessions with the same counsellor. Your appointment will generally be at the same time each week, lasting 50 minutes.
"It helped me understand myself better and learn to control my anxiety and give me confidence in myself again."
"Counselling has helped me clear my head and see lots of things differently. It’s helped me to be more aware of what I have been through, it feels that my moods have improved and I now have a more positive outlook on life due to my sessions."
Additionally to our one-on-one counselling, we have developed three groups for individuals to work through specific issues with others who have experienced, or may be struggling with, similar things. Each of our groups has an average of just 8 members, and are facilitated by two Yellow Door counsellors.
Joining a group may seem scary to some people at first, but group-based therapy can be an ideal option for many people who feel alone with their experiences or who want to learn how to develop their relationship skills. Many group members find the shared understanding of others in the group can give them the opportunity to make positive changes.
These are our current groups for adult members:
Emotional Coping Skills
This group is available for men and women who are struggling with managing feelings and emotions and who are seeking to find ways of better managing their ability to cope in day to day life.
The Emotional Coping Skills group can help you to:
Improve day-to-day functioning
Cope better with stressful situations
Learn to choose healthier strategies for managing emotions and relationships with others.
The group runs for 8 weeks, and each session is an hour and a half long.
"Then & Now"
This weekly group was initiated in 2017, and has been developed as a specialist therapeutic group for adults who experienced sexual abuse in childhood. It offers a safe space to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences in a group setting.
The Safer Relationships Group is weekly group specifically for women who have experienced domestic abuse. We recognise that domestic abuse comes in many forms and can affect people in many different ways. This can be through experiences of physical violence and intimidation; psychological and emotional abuse; or excessive financial control and abuses which can leave you feeling isolated and trapped within an abusive relationship.
This group looks at what unhealthy behaviour within relationships can look like, and seeks to establish healthy ways of establishing safe and happy relationships. Group members have the opportunity to share their experiences and assist one another in finding individually appropriate solutions to challenging circumstances.
