Volunteering & Involvement at Yellow Door

Here at Yellow Door we are very excited about the upcoming national Volunteering Week (1 – 7 June). This week presents us with an excellent opportunity to both reflect on the wonderful work our current volunteers do, as well as to look to the future, at our plans for engaging and utilising new volunteers to support our work in response to, and prevention of, domestic and sexual abuse across the region.

Introducing our Volunteer & Involvement Coordinator

It has been a big year for Yellow Door, with lots of successes and new developments, and we would not be able to do this without the support of our volunteers. In April this year, we appointed a new Volunteer and Involvement Co-ordinator who will be taking the helm of our volunteer project and looking to expand our reach in the community. The appointment of this post demonstrates how integral volunteering is to the overall delivery plan for Yellow Door and with a dedicated co-ordinator, we can make big plans for our volunteer project.

Community Engagement

Over the next year we want to ensure that we increase the diversity of our volunteer pool and make use of all the knowledge and skills that exist in our local community. We have so many exciting opportunities for volunteers in the service - from counselling through to greeting service users on reception and supporting callers of our helpline. We know that across Southampton and beyond exists a vibrant, diverse community and we want to ensure that our volunteer pool reflects this. It is our aim to make sure we are getting involved in community events and sharing information about what our service does and how it helps the community - and how you can get involved in joining our mission to tackle domestic and sexual abuse.

Celebrating our Volunteers

This Volunteers’ Week we want to take some time to really acknowledge and give thanks to all the volunteers who have dedicated their time to support us, both past and present. We want to celebrate the fact that people have offered us their time, their skills and their passion in order to help ensure we offer the best possible service for those affected by abuse. Our volunteers support us at every stage - working with both adults and children; facilitating groups; taking calls on the helpline; completing telephone assessments; welcoming visitors to the building; fundraising; and all sorts of behind the scenes tasks that keep us going.

Our volunteers give their time selflessly to us and our service users and we are so grateful to have them. Thank you to you all!

Plans for the Future

Having seen all the fantastic capabilities of our volunteers, our ambitions for our volunteer project continue to grow to match the skills and passion presented to us. This is why, over the coming months, we are going to get our message out in the community as well as bringing the community to us.

This Summer, we’re delighted to have volunteers eager to help us spruce up the building and complete some essential maintenance in the garden and in our counselling rooms. We are grateful to all of the local businesses who are helping us achieve this – special big thank yous go out to the Co-Op who have been helping us paint some of our rooms and to JLL Southampton Property Services whose staff will be sparing an afternoon to come and tackle our beautiful garden and get it Summer-ready.

We are also very excited to be running our next volunteer training programme in June/July 2019 which will see us deliver core training to approx. 20 new volunteers who will then make their way across Yellow Door’s various services in a variety of roles.

There are lots of great community events taking place in Southampton in the next few months and Yellow Door want to make sure we are there! We are particularly looking forward to Fresher’s Fayres in September where we are hoping to engage with young people in the community and talk to them about the great opportunities we have to get involved in our work. This will be particularly important to us as we are backing the #iwill campaign this year that aims to make more volunteering opportunities available to young people.

Get Involved!

If you would like to join our volunteer team and would like to find out more about our opportunities you can find out more on our website. From there, please get in contact with us at volunteering@yellowdoor.org.uk.

We offer training and development opportunities, and will work hard to try and make sure it’s in an area of work that matches your skills, interest and aspirations. Yellow Door are also pleased to offer a supportive and friendly atmosphere, and a chance to make a real difference to the lives of thousands of women, men, children, young people and families across Western Hampshire each and every year.
