Yellow Door meets Mencap

At Yellow Door, meeting the diverse needs of members across the community is very important to us. Our Diversity and Inclusion team was developed to support to those who have experienced, or are at risk of, domestic or sexual abuse. The team works to improve access to services, and make sure that people’s needs and wishes are heard and respected when they might otherwise face barriers to support. As part of our outreach work, raising awareness of abuse and the support we offer, we recently had the privilege of visiting a local Mencap Day Service and spent time with a group of adults with learning disabilities.

Own2Feet is Mencap Southampton’s Day Service Programme for people with learning disabilities. It promotes independence skills and an understanding of the world in which we live. We believe that everyone deserves the right to feel safe, respected and to live a life free from abuse. Awareness of abuse is paramount in preventing it, even more so to those more vulnerable members of society who are more at risk and less likely to be able to spot abuse or know what to do if it happens to them. Having open and honest discussions empowers people to give informed consent, engage in relationships that are equal and respectful and teach them the language required to describe and report any unwanted experiences.

The five sessions delivered to the group covered topics such as what a healthy relationship looks like, different types of abuse and where to get help, consent and appropriate behaviours, hate crime and how to say no. The resources used for the sessions were engaging and pitched at an appropriate level for the abilities of the group. Picture prompts, role-play and the use of scenarios were great tools to spark conversation and there were many thoughtful discussions and questions raised. The group made a visit to Yellow Door the week after our final session for a farewell cup of tea and cake to allow the members of the group to become familiar with where the building is if they chose to access the service in the future.

Thanks for having us Own2Feet!
